Why you should visit Saudi Arabia this summer

Saudi Arabia might not be the first place that springs to mind, but it’s packed with mountain towns, lush green landscapes and cultural events that are worth adding to your diary
With a rich roster of things to do and places to see, the country’s mountainous regions – Taif, Al Baha and Aseer – offer up a brilliant season for travellers.
Check out this itinerary to make your escape memorable.
Start with a mountain retreat at Taif

Begin your journey at a mountain retreat that swaps desert heat for fragrant breezes and sweeping views. Known as the City of Roses, Taif is a highland town that blooms into life in the summer.

You can take a scenic cable car ride across Al Hada Mountain, explore rose farms and stretch your legs on cool walking trails.

Tour the rose factory

Make time to visit Al Shiokh Factory on Al Kur-Al Hada Road to see how rose oil is produced. The factory tour will take you through the process from picking the blooms to distilling the essence. You’ll find rose-scented perfumes, soaps, moisturisers and incense, and can finish the visit with a hot drink in a garden-like setting.
Have family-friendly fun during Taif Season

Taif Season also runs through August, with events in Al Hada and Al Kar that blend music, food and family fun. Expect food trucks, open-air shows, local market stalls and workshops where you can try your hand at traditional cooking. All set against a backdrop of pine-covered hills and cooler weather that makes it a welcome change from the city heat.
Visit a strawberry farm

A short drive away, the Strawberry Farm in Al Hada is a wholesome, year-round destination. Families love the bird gardens, duck ponds and lakeside picnic areas. There’s strawberry juice, ice cream and pastries to snack on, plus a quirky upside-down house that’s especially fun with little ones in tow.

Revisit the past at Al Shareef Museum

For a culture fix, Al Shareef Museum offers a walk through the history of the Hejaz region. From old coins and weapons to traditional garments and household items, the collection is a glimpse into the past.
Check out Al Baha next

Down south, Al Baha is an underrated spot with its mix of green forests, historical buildings and local markets.

The countryside retreat will have you hiking by the waterfall, camping in the forests and taking a step back into the history of Al Baha
Wander through the Almalad Castle ruins

Head to the southern end of Al Baha up in the Sarat Mountains, and you’ll find the twin fortress made completely of natural rocks, that ages at least 400 years old. This archaeological splendour offers a glimpse into the centuries of tribal life and regional unity of the region. History geeks won’t want to miss this spot.
Snap pics at AlHamda waterfalls

Yes, it might come as a surprise, but Saudi Arabia is home to lush, tropical-looking waterfalls – and AlHamda waterfall is one of them.

Tucked away in the mountains, this scenic spot features several small to medium-sized falls cascading through greenery. If you’re on the lookout for hidden, almost otherworldly places to explore, this one is well worth pinning on your map.
Camp in mist-covered forests

Raghadan Forest, an iconic outdoor destination, is a peaceful stop for a walk among the trees or a natural camping sesh. There are plenty of activities for the whole fam here, from enjoying stunning views of picturesque forests from atop hills to trekking through mist-covered trails.

Don’t miss the Heritage Market in Baljurashi, it gives you a real sense of the local lifestyle and crafts.
For a taste of adventure, visit Aseer

Aseer brings in the adventurous crowd. Thrill-seekers should get in touch with Husaak Adventures in Tanomah, which runs hiking trips and outdoor excursions in some of the region’s most rugged landscapes.
