Southern Tanzania is not as active as other areas of the country in relation to tourism but a youth initiative dubbed ‘Kusini Utalii Festival’ is looking to change that and promote the regions of Mtwara and Lindi.
Executive Secretary of Kusini Utalii Festival organising team, Onesmo Christopher, told ‘The Guardian’ over the weekend that the event is scheduled for April 21 and 27, this year.  According to Christopher, the festival has been designed to evoke unity and to challenge the participants to recognise tourism.
The event is expected to attract more than 500 participants from different angles of the country including students, diplomats, entrepreneurs, tour operators, investors, public officials and media personnel.
Chairman of the event’s organising committee, Shaban Mweta, called upon stakeholders from within and outside Tanzania to join aid in the effort to make the tourism-showcasing event successful. He noted that if the southern tourist circuit will be exploited many youth will get employment.
The Kusini Utalii Festival, will be held under the theme; ‘Fahamu uzuri wa nchi yako, wafanye wengine waukubali’ (Know the beauty of your country, get others appreciate it).
Fatma Mikidadi, (Special Seats, CUF) noted that:
 “The festival is timely and it will showcase tourist destinations available in Lindi and Mtwara regions…” the MP  also cited  the ruins of Kilwa as important historical sites, potential for tourism.
She said Mtwara and Lindi have so much to offer in terms of history, culture, irresistible landscape from the hinterland to the palm tree fringed beaches along the Indian Ocean.
It is to be remembered that, Mtwara has long attracted tourists to the Nation leading to the establishment of the Spiced Swahili Coast culture all thanks to the Makonde carvings that are named after the superb and unique artistic wood carvers of the Makonde tribe.
