Professor Kefa Otiso, one of the leading Kenyan scholars based in the US has been at the forefront in championing Diaspora issues especially Dual Citizenship and the full implementation of voting rights for the Diaspora.
The book, ‘ Culture and Customs of Tanzania’ released at the end of January 2013 by Greenwood Press, is a reference volume covering the geography and history of Tanzania in addition to the country’s religious practices, literature, media, film, art, housing, cuisine, dress, marriage and family structures, gender roles, social customs and lifestyles, as well as music, dance and drama.
The 250 pages hard cover book is now available in bookstores and Amazon.
Tanzania is the largest and most diverse country in East Africa. It is larger than the combined area of its immediate neighbours; Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda. Aside from its more than 130 indigenous ethnic groups, it also has a sprinkling of people groups from other parts of the world.
Most of its people are practitioners of Christianity, Islam, and various African traditional religions. Yet despite this diversity, Tanzania is one of Africa’s most politically stable countries. It currently has one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
Speaking to The Standard, Prof Otiso said that even though he would have loved to write one on his native Kenya, he couldn’t because Neal Sobania had already written that volume in 2003. Nevertheless Otiso is at the forefront of promoting Kenya’s cause in the US as current president of the Kenya Scholars and Studies Association whose annual conference is held every September.
Otiso, who also wrote the Culture and Customs of Uganda in 2006, is grateful for the chance to write the two books “because they have given me a chance to expand the frontiers of knowledge as well as my horizon”.
Both books are designed to be accessible to wide audiences including students, tourists, journalists and other general readers.
He encourages Africans, especially academicians, to be at the forefront of writing their countries’ stories and histories as this would go a long way in correcting the continent’s poor image abroad.
“A lot of the books that currently exist on Africa are really on the experience of outsiders such as Europeans in Africa. These outsiders seldom do a good job of portraying the continent’s cultures and customs,” he said.
The release of Otiso’s publication is timely as it coincides with President Obama’s visit to Tanzania at the end of June 2013.
During the socialist era, Tanzania emphasised on the publication of Swahili books. When it switched to capitalism in the mid-1980s, it started to promote the use of English and has since had a big shortage of English books.
Besides the lack of enough English writers in the country, the shortage is also due to its young publishing industry.
Some of the Tanzanians who have seen the book wish it were available in the Tanzanian school system that seldom teaches the material covered in the book. Many Tanzanians are relatively uninformed of the geography and history of their own country.
Prof Otiso teaches urban, economic, population, and development geography at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, USA. He is also the director of the university’s global village. Otiso can be reached at kmotiso@outlook.com.

The chilling clip lasts just 21 seconds, but films the entire savage attack in a housing complex in Mulund, northeast of Mumbai, India.
A fixed security camera picks up the sleek silhouette of the big cat as it strolls into the lobby.
The lightly coloured dog can be seen curled up, possibly asleep, in the bottom right of shot – oblivious to the approaching predator.
Within a few seconds the leopard has closed in on the unsuspecting pet.
By the time the canine realises it is in mortal danger, the leopard clamps its jaws around the dog’s throat.
The pet ferociously struggles in vain to free itself from the cat’s vice-like-grip, as it is dragged towards the exit, during the video clip.
The leopard pauses for a moment, standing its front legs on its stricken prey, then darts towards the open doors.
The entire attack lasts little more than seven seconds before the dog is pulled out of camera shot and into the darkness of the Mumbai streets, where it is assumed it was eaten.
Leopards have mauled or killed more than 100 people over the past decade in and around Mumbai and official attempts to solve the problem were making it worse.
The problem or wild cat attacks is not restricted to India.
Earlier this year, marksmen had to shoot dead a leopard which seriously injured 15 people – including three police officers – after wandering into a suburb of Kathmandu.
A furious crowd dragged the mortally wounded animal through the streets of Gothatar on the outskirts of Kathmandu at.
Graphic photographs capture residents fleeing for their lives as the leopard prowled between buildings.
Armed police from Metropolitan Police Circle, Koteshwor, were on the scene within minutes and managed to corner the animal, but not before it had mauled more than a dozen residents.
Upto three policemen and two officials from the Department of Forest were injured as they tried to trap the wild cat, according to local reports.
Police said that all the injured were rushed to Mother Land Hospital, Pepsicola for the medical treatment.

In this regard the President Uhuru said a quick win that can be implemented and which would have a tremendous impact to the economies of the member states would be a common EAC Tourist Visa.
“It is my hope that our governments can work on this and other initiatives that will have tangible benefits for our economies and people,” the President said.
He noted that Uganda is a key economic partner to Kenya and gave his personal commitment to ensure Kenya does its part in facilitating trade and investment between the two countries.
“ Uganda is Kenya’s largest export destination globally. Kenyan companies are also leading investors inUganda in the areas of banking, insurance, manufacturing, and agriculture. In addition, mostUgandan imports and exports pass through our Port of Mombasa,” he said.
The President noted that it is for this reason that he directed the operations at the Port of Mombasa be streamlined with the aim of hastening the clearing of cargo.
“In addition, I have directed that the relevant government agencies ensure that the movement of goods from Mombasa to Malaba takes a maximum of five days. Indeed, the current situation where goods take up to eighteen days to get to Kampala from Mombasa is untenable and unsustainable if our businesses are going to thrive and transform to global corporations, “ the Head of State said
Speaking on Monday night during a state banquet held in his honour at State House Entebbe, Uganda, President Uhuru noted that regional economic integration is an important component in the development agenda of the EAC.
He said the Kenyan and Ugandan Governments hold the key to the prosperity of the people of these two nations.
President Uhuru reiterated the need for unity among the political, legislative and public service leaders in EAC Member States so as to ensure that the potential of the Community is achieved.
“With a market of over 130 million people, our East African Community has the potential for rapid economic growth and massive employment creation,” the President said.
Expressing his commitment to the ideals of EAC, President Uhuru noted that his Government is focused in achieving the integration agenda which he noted marks the beginning of Africa renaissance.
He said integration agenda can only be achieved by getting rid of all non-tariff barriers to trade that may be hindering the movement of goods as well as workers across the different countries.
The President further said legislatures also need to domesticate all aspects of the Customs Union and Common Market Protocols.
Speaking during the function, President Yoweri Museveni expressed his gratitude to Kenya and other nations for hosting Ugandans during their time of need adding that Kenya is home to many Ugandans.
President Uhuru is in Uganda to attend the Infrastructure and Investment Summit.
He is accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries, Ambassador Amina Mohamed, Engineer Michael Kamau, Adan Mohammed and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.

WWF welcomes Peru as host of 2014 UN climate change summit
Gland, Switzerland: WWF has welcomed the announcement that Peru will be the host of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Ch... 09:12The presidency of COP 20 will have an extraordinary opportunity to shape a future global deal, says Samantha Smith, leader of WWF’s Global Climate & Energy Initiative.
“It will require depth and driving commitment in leadership and diplomacy if we are to have meaningful progress in these international climate negotiations going into 2015, and I believe Peru is the country that is fully capable of delivering on this,” Smith said.
As a developing country, Peru will be in a unique position to straddle one of the most contentious divides in the negotiations, between developed and developing countries.
“We would like to see Peru driving a progressive approach to resolving key issues of ambition and finance,” Tasneem Essop, WWF Head of Delegation to the UNFCCC.
WWF-Peru CEO Patricia Leon Melgar says Peru, and all Latin America, have much at stake, both in terms of impact and in providing solutions in these negotiations.
“From our massive forest carbon stores to the need to adapt to climate change to meet our development needs, this is a moment and opportunity for Peru and Latin America to show the necessary leadership to tackle these global problems. WWF congratulates the Peruvian government and looks forward to work close along with the rest of civil society to prepare for this event.”
